all of the punks i've scene in l.a. have been way too clean. what's with that? i'm not saying one has to be completely crusty to be punk rock, but c'mon. i miss the dirties.

Fri, November 24, 2006 - 9:20 AMyah I came from sanny franny - much more punk city. LA is just not really a city conducive to a punk type attitude. The cost of living is too good, and it's too sunny.
speaking of clean punks... is your hair in a bun in that photo?

Fri, November 24, 2006 - 6:38 PMYeah, I just moved away from Los Angeles and I found nearly ALL the subcultures there to be far too cut-n-dried: punk, industrial, rockabilly, indie, goth, whatever. They'll all too clean and fancy for my tastes. My ex-girlfriend was into the whole Burning Man and fire-dancing thing and even those hippies were into new neon clothes and pristine dreadlocks. I mean, how are pristine dreadlocks even possible?
Stupid LA!
But nonetheless there are very good people to be found in Los Angeles. Some of them are probably members of this tribe.

Tue, May 1, 2007 - 11:47 PMNow, back in the DAY we were unwashed and not at all pretty. I personally had to force myself to wash my hair. And L.A. in the late '70's was PERFECT for a punk attitude. Just because you apparently came along after all the West L.A. trendies and Valley wanna-bes came in, and you missed all the really fun planter-sleeping, warm-beer guzzling, vacant-lot-hanging-out, Hollywood alley-crawling Fun, doesn't mean it didn't exist. And all this was also before all the tedious self-conscious subcultures that you mention, John. Gabba gabba hey.

Thu, December 10, 2009 - 1:09 PMKinda ironic. I was FILTHY when I lived in San Francisco. Like... clean balls in sinks when it got really bad filthy. Then I finally found this crack hotel I was able to rent really cheap and got bed bugs. It messed with my head really really bad...gave up those days and moved to LA and have lived sort of normal life (everyone told me in SF I'd hate this city...I kind of do hate LA culture, but CA culture is good and LA has been thousands of times easier to survive)
I think as someone said, when rent is cheap and life is easy the spirit dies a bit. I mean there's still a vibrant scene in London, and I think because its so fucking expensive.
LA is interesting...it's so insecure in so many ways...but the fake here is so obvious its easy to steer clear.
